Over 100 of the UK’s elite athletes have addressed an open letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, calling for governmental support for London’s bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships. Among the notable signatories are Sir Mo Farah, Keely Hodgkinson, Dame Kelly Holmes, Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, and Daley Thompson, representing both past and present champions.
The bid, if it proceeds successfully, would see the prestigious World Championships take place at London Stadium. This initiative is projected to necessitate a “one-time public funding boost in 2028,” with an anticipated “£400 million economic uplift” for the nation.
The letter emphasizes that bringing the world’s top athletes back to British soil would not only be a sporting highlight but also serve to inspire future generations to participate in athletics, noted for its diversity and inclusivity.
Many signatories reminisced about their experiences during the 2012 and 2017 events, whether as spectators or volunteers. They expressed that these moments ignited their passion for the sport, motivating countless young individuals to engage in athletics, whether as participants, coaches, or officials.
The bidding process for the 2029 Championships is set to kick off this summer, with organizers urging the government to act swiftly in securing the event for the UK. Notably, London last hosted the Championships in 2017, further establishing its reputation as a premier venue for global athletics events.
