Tragedy in Sudan: Over 1,000 Lives Lost in Darfur Landslide Amid Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis

BREAKING NEWS,

The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army requests UN assistance to recover victims’ bodies from a village devastated by a landslide following severe rain.

A catastrophic landslide has obliterated an entire village in the western Darfur region of Sudan, with a rebel group estimating that around 1,000 lives were lost.

Reports indicate that the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army released a statement on Monday regarding the tragedy in the Marra Mountains area.

The landslide occurred on Sunday, following several days of intense rainfall, rendering the village “completely flattened,” with only one person managing to survive.

“Preliminary assessments suggest that all residents of the village—over a thousand people—are presumed dead, except for one survivor,” the movement stated in their release.

The group has called on the United Nations and global aid organizations for support in retrieving the deceased, including numerous children.

This disaster unfolds against the backdrop of Sudan’s civil war, now entering its third year, exacerbating one of the worst humanitarian crises worldwide, with some areas of Darfur already facing famine.

Many fleeing skirmishes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in North Darfur sought refuge in the Marra Mountains, where reports indicate severe shortages of food and medicine.

Elements of the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, which governs the landslide-affected region, have pledged allegiance to the Sudanese military in their battle against the RSF.

Violence has intensified in Darfur, particularly in el-Fasher, ever since the army regained control of the capital, Khartoum, from the RSF in March.

El-Fasher has been besieged for over a year by the RSF, which aims to seize this strategic city, the last significant stronghold of the army in Darfur.

The RSF, having lost much of central Sudan, including Khartoum, earlier this year, is now attempting to consolidate its influence in the west and establish a competing governance.
