Rescue Operation: YouTube Contestant Missing in Northern Michigan Wilderness
In a dramatic turn of events in northern Michigan, a 36-year-old contestant from California participating in a YouTube outdoor survival challenge was rescued after being missing for nearly 18 hours. This incident unfolded in the Pigeon River State Forest, located northeast of Gaylord, where the woman had ventured out in search of water around 5 p.m. on Friday.
When she failed to return, the challenge organizers promptly initiated a search. By 5 a.m. on Saturday, they alerted emergency services due to growing concerns for her safety. The search effort quickly mobilized local authorities, including the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, who faced challenging conditions with areas still impacted by an ice storm that wreaked havoc in northern Michigan earlier in March.
Just after 10:40 a.m. on Saturday, the woman’s location was identified in a swampy region by troopers aboard a Michigan State Police helicopter. Footage captured shows her waving from a dense wooded area as rescuers approached.
The pilot communicated with the ground crew, stating, “Definitely got her. I’m basically right over top of her right now,” facilitating the rescue operation guided by an MSP K-9 unit.
Fortunately, the woman managed to walk out of the wilderness under her own power and did not suffer any serious injuries.
