Galloping Against the Odds: British Racing Protests Proposed Betting Tax Hike Amidst Industry Unrest

British Racing Faces Funding Challenges: Jockeys Consider Moving Abroad

In 2025, prominent jockey Tom Marquand expressed concerns that both he and his wife, fellow rider Hollie Doyle, might have to relocate internationally due to potential cuts in funding for British racing. “It’s disheartening to think that we may have to leave our home country to pursue the sport we love,” Marquand shared with BBC Sport.

Highlighting the significance of the racing industry, Marquand pointed out that it employs approximately 85,000 individuals, underscoring the far-reaching consequences of financial instability in this sector. “Today is pivotal for racing, and we hope it leads to positive changes,” he added.

During a recent filming at Windsor Races, many spectators echoed support for the racing community. Racegoer Alan Mills remarked, “It’s a fantastic day out, and a little bet adds to the excitement. The bookmakers rely on patronage to keep their businesses afloat; we should be boosting the sport, not jeopardizing jobs.”

Conversely, the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), representing various betting establishments, voiced their concerns over not being consulted regarding rescheduled racing fixtures. “The decision to alter the schedule was made without input from betting operators, whose financial assistance is crucial for the sport,” they stated.

They cautioned against mere political gestures that could further alienate the government and frustrate punters, emphasizing the need for a collaborative approach to address mutual challenges faced by both the racing and betting industries.
