Poland’s Bold Defense: Shooting Down Drones Amid Rising Tensions Following Russian Assault on Ukraine

Date: September 10, 2025

Poland has taken significant military action, downing drones intruding into its airspace amid an increase in tensions due to ongoing Russian operations targeting Ukraine. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported multiple breaches of airspace on Wednesday, attributing these violations to a Russian aerial offensive against neighboring Ukraine.

“Today’s Russian Federation attack has led to numerous drone incursions over our territory,” the military command stated. In response, the Polish forces have initiated operations to track and neutralize the downed drones.

Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, confirmed that efforts are in place to address the continual infringements. “An active operation is underway concerning repeated violations of Polish airspace. The military has used weaponry to respond to these threats,” he declared in a tweet. Tusk emphasized that he remains in constant communication with both the President and the Defence Minister regarding the situation.

In light of the military operations, several Polish airports, including Warsaw’s primary Chopin Airport, have been temporarily closed. Notices from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the shut down of three additional airports: Rzeszów-Jasionka, Warsaw Modlin, and Lublin. Details regarding these closures have yet to be addressed by Poland’s military.

Earlier reports indicated that Ukrainian forces flagged a potential threat from Russian drones entering Polish airspace, particularly endangering the area around Zamość. Although this claim was subsequently retracted from their public channels, it underscores the heightened alert status across western Ukraine, which has been under air raid warnings.

In a proactive security measure, Poland announced plans to close its border with Belarus at midnight local time on Thursday, coinciding with Russian-led military exercises expected to unfold in Belarus. The “Zapad-2025” drills will heighten concerns among NATO allies, including Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia.

Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski stated that the border would remain shut until authorities are convinced there are no threats to citizens. In response, Belarus has lodged a formal complaint against Poland, deeming the closure an overreach of its geographical position.

Simultaneously, Lithuania’s border guard announced enhanced protection of its borders with Belarus and Russia in anticipation of the military exercises.

As this situation develops, Poland continues to prioritize national security and cooperation with allied forces.
