As the Rugby Football League (RFL) prepares for the Super League’s potential expansion to 14 teams in 2026, Salford Red Devils have notably opted not to submit an application. This decision comes amid ongoing financial challenges facing the club. While fellow Super League teams such as Huddersfield Giants and Hull FC have put their names forward, Salford’s absence from the list of applicants, released on Monday, raises questions about their future within the league.
Joining the race for inclusion in this expanded Super League are seven clubs from the Championship division: Bradford Bulls, Doncaster, London Broncos, Oldham, Toulouse Olympique, Widnes Vikings, and York Knights. The RFL will announce the final lineup for the 2026 season on October 16, initially confirming the first 12 teams based on a grading system before evaluating the strength of applications for the two additional slots.
