In a recent statement, Steven Davis, the first team coach for Northern Ireland, emphasized that the recent achievements of players in Michael O’Neill’s squad at their respective clubs could significantly bolster their international performance.
With upcoming international friendlies against Denmark on June 7 and Iceland on June 10, several players have played vital roles in recent matches for their teams.
“Just take a look at the remarkable seasons some of our players have had,” Davis noted in an interview with BBC Sport NI during an Irish FA coaching course in Belfast. “For instance, Conor Bradley clinched the Premier League title with Liverpool, Justin Devenny secured an FA Cup win with Crystal Palace, and Trai Hume and Dan Ballard celebrated their promotion to the Premier League with Sunderland.”
“It’s crucial for these athletes to keep advancing at their clubs. Their development will make them better prepared for international challenges.”
Davis, a veteran with 140 caps for his country, reflected on the noticeable strides made within the squad over the past year and a half, noting positive results and their position at the top of their Nations League group.
These friendly matches are essential preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign beginning in September.
“International football doesn’t offer much time together, so it’s imperative to maximize our sessions to reinforce strategies and build upon them,” Davis explained. “The upcoming fixtures will provide a valuable test as we gear up for formidable opponents like Germany, Slovakia, and Luxembourg in World Cup qualifying.”
