Real Madrid has officially announced the acquisition of England’s Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool.
Real Madrid has secured defender Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool on a contract extending until 2031.
The 26-year-old, who is part of the England national team, was nearing the end of his contract at Anfield. However, the Spanish club expedited his transfer, enabling him to participate in the upcoming Club World Cup, according to a statement released on Friday.
Having just celebrated a Premier League title with Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold rose through the ranks of his childhood club and notably won the Champions League in 2019.
In addition to his Champions League victory, he claimed the Premier League title in 2020, making a total of 352 appearances for Liverpool.
A notable addition to Real Madrid’s roster, he reunites with former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who recently took over as head coach after Carlo Ancelotti’s departure.
Alexander-Arnold’s departure stirred mixed emotions among Liverpool fans, some of whom expressed their disapproval during his farewell match. Nevertheless, following endorsements from influential figures, including former manager Jürgen Klopp and star Mohamed Salah, he received a warm reception when he hoisted the Premier League trophy at Anfield last Sunday.
He joins a Real Madrid squad seeking redemption after a trophy-less campaign this past season.
Despite some criticism regarding his defensive focus, Alexander-Arnold is known for his exceptional passing ability and attacking prowess on the right side of the pitch.
This season, Real Madrid has faced difficulties in the right-back position, with Dani Carvajal recovering from a significant knee injury and winger Lucas Vázquez struggling in an unfamiliar role.
Alexander-Arnold is set to make his debut for Real Madrid during their opening match against Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in the Club World Cup, scheduled for June 18, 2025, in Miami.
In addition, Real Madrid has bolstered their defense by signing Spanish center-back Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, aiming to fortify a back line that has been heavily impacted by injuries this season.
