South Africa Secures World Test Championship Title with Victory Over Australia at Lord’s
In a historic showdown at Lord’s, South Africa triumphed over Australia to clinch the World Test Championship, marking their first ICC trophy in 27 years. On Saturday, they needed to chase down 69 runs to secure the title, and despite the challenges, they delivered an impressive performance.
Captain Temba Bavuma, who played through a hamstring injury sustained the previous day, contributed a crucial 66 runs. However, his innings came to an end when he edged a delivery from Pat Cummins into the hands of wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
Facing a formidable target of 282 runs set by the defending champions, South Africa rose to the occasion. Aiden Markram shone brightly, scoring a remarkable century — his eighth in Test cricket and undoubtedly the most significant of his career. His innings of 136 was pivotal to the team’s success.
Tristan Stubbs managed only eight runs in a brief appearance but left the stage quickly when Mitchell Starc bowled him out. Nevertheless, Markram’s steady performance, coupled with contributions from teammates like David Bedingham, brought them to within arm’s reach of victory.
As the team approached the final runs, Markram was ultimately caught by Travis Head, but his contribution was central to South Africa’s victory. Kyle Verreynne sealed the win, guiding South Africa to a five-wicket victory.
“I’m just relieved,” Verreynne expressed after the match. “That was probably the most nervous I’ve ever been, but we managed to get it over the line. It’s incredible.” This victory in 2025 has definitely etched a memorable chapter in South African cricket history.
