Embrace empowerment and engage in activities that foster wellness, no matter your age.

While I was casually enjoying an online book review, an advertisement appeared, claiming, “At Last, a Fantastic Lipstick for Mature Women!” Later, while checking the weather, another ad read, “Chic Outfits for Older Women.” Google certainly keeps track of my interests.

However, it’s not only the internet highlighting your age; it’s also the people around you. From a doctor cautioning you about hiking after a tumble, to constant complaints about the gerontocracy present in our political system, society continually reminds us of our age, insisting there are things we shouldn’t attempt anymore.

These imposed traditions regarding aging do have consequences. Ageism is prevalent, and its detrimental effects on health are significant, even having the potential to reduce lifespan.

When you internalize ageist notions suggesting you can no longer participate in certain activities or contribute meaningfully to society, it creates a self-fulfilling prophecy that can be overwhelming. This concept means that if you believe something will happen, it often shapes your behavior to match that expectation—Oh, I’m too old to learn a new language? Why bother trying to master Italian?

Ultimately, studies indicate that as we age, we often enjoy enhanced levels of well-being, increased life satisfaction, and greater emotional stability.
