Chris Sutton Urges Celtic to Step Up in Transfer Market Ahead of Glasgow Rivalry

Former Celtic player Chris Sutton has expressed his worries regarding the team’s slow transfer activity this summer. He emphasizes the necessity for the Scottish Champions to bolster their squad while they are riding high.

Currently, the only fresh face joining the team is Kieran Tierney, who has made a return from Arsenal with a five-year contract after finalizing a pre-contract agreement in February.

In promising news, Celtic is reportedly in discussions with FC Nordsjaelland regarding winger Benjamin Nygren. The two clubs are believed to be negotiating a transfer fee for the player.

Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton make their predictions for the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership title.

Additionally, Celtic is reportedly pursuing Albirex Niigata center-back Hayato Inamura, with sources suggesting the 23-year-old is eager to relocate to Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Greg Taylor’s contract situation remains uncertain, as he has yet to make a decision regarding his future, following speculation that several players in the Celtic squad could attract inquiries from other clubs.

Sutton, who previously donned the Hoops jersey for over five years, conveyed his fears about potential complacency within the club.

“I find it slightly troubling that Celtic hasn’t brought in more players yet. When a team is as strong as they are, it’s essential to maintain momentum by enhancing the squad,” he mentioned during an interview with Sky Sports News.

“I believe more signings are certainly in the works, and it’s advantageous to reinforce the squad early on. Early acquisitions allow players to acclimatize, especially with upcoming Champions League qualifiers that significantly impact both Rangers and Celtic’s financial standings.”

“Despite Celtic’s previous season of dominance—capturing a double—the pressure will be immediate moving forward.”

Sutton further remarked, “Had Celtic retained Kyogo, I firmly believe they would have achieved a treble this season. However, losing such quality was a significant setback.”

“While his stint at Rennes might not have been stellar, he had a knack for scoring decisive goals. His departure has left a void that wasn’t filled in January, raising a real concern for the club.”

Greg Taylor’s future remains uncertain with his contract at Celtic expiring.

Sutton noted, “The return of Kieran Tierney is a significant development. Coming back to Celtic, he’s arguably at his peak, despite having limited playing time at Arsenal. The left-back situation regarding Greg Taylor’s future needs to be addressed swiftly.”

“Securing Cameron Carter-Vickers should also be a priority for Celtic. It’s vital they continue to enhance their squad from a position of strength and make decisive moves in the transfer market to solidify their dominance over Rangers this season.”
