Prominent boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has suggested that a potential clash between heavyweight stars Anthony Joshua and rising talent Moses Itauma could materialize, but only if a world title is at stake. Itauma, although early in his professional journey, has demonstrated remarkable skill, recently achieving a swift victory over Dillian Whyte.
At 15 years Joshua’s senior, the former unified heavyweight champion faces a unique challenge if he were to step into the ring with the promising 20-year-old Itauma. Frank Warren, Itauma’s promoter, shared his enthusiasm for the matchup during an interview with Sky Sports, stating, “I’d set up that fight tomorrow; however, it’s unlikely as both fighters share the same trainer, Ben Davison.”
Hearn echoed this sentiment, stating that while he sees potential in a Joshua-Itauma bout, the risks may outweigh the rewards. He expressed concern over what Joshua could gain from facing such a young competitor: “Winning simply means defeating a 20-year-old, and losing could end your career.”
Despite acknowledging Itauma’s exceptional abilities, Hearn emphasized the importance of a thoughtful approach to his career trajectory. “Moses has a lot of talent, but it’s critical to assess whether he can endure the challenges of a championship fight,” he remarked, urging caution in rushing him into tougher bouts. He added, “I’d prefer to see him face established fighters like Agit Kabayel or Jarrell Miller to better gauge his capabilities.”
In the backdrop of the heavyweight division’s dynamic landscape in the USA, Hearn confidently stated, “Moses will undoubtedly become a world heavyweight champion… but let’s take measured steps forward.”
