“Securing second place feels attainable, but aiming for the top spot will be a real challenge.”
Hearts have kicked off the 2025 season with an electrifying performance, as former captain Christophe Berra affirms predictions from Tony Bloom that they could potentially disrupt the dominance of the Old Firm and claim the Scottish Premiership within the next decade.
Derek McInnes, who remains unbeaten in league play since taking over at Tynecastle Park, saw his team assert their authority with a convincing 3-0 victory over Falkirk, putting them two points ahead of Celtic, who faltered in a draw against Hibs.
“The team is thriving, and the manager has made remarkable strides with the squad. Their current form is impressive,” remarked Berra, recalling a time when Hearts recorded eight victories out of ten games in the early stages of the 2005-06 season under George Burley.
“Winning the league is undoubtedly a formidable challenge, but the team is in great shape right now, and the manager brings a wealth of experience. He has a successful history with Aberdeen,” Berra added.
“It’s essential to approach each match methodically, ensuring that we secure wins and avoid defeats. We can reassess the situation after 30 matches into the season.”
“Celtic hasn’t found their rhythm yet, and it’s likely they’ll improve. On the other hand, Rangers appear somewhat vulnerable, so claiming second place is certainly within reach.”
“However, capturing the first spot poses a significant challenge, though the squad possesses strong talent,” he noted.
During the summer transfer window, Hearts welcomed ten new players, aided by Bloom’s Jamestown Analytics—a firm that has previously excelled at Brighton and Union Saint-Gilloise.
“Bloom’s hiring was strategic; he has proven his worth at multiple clubs, particularly at Brighton,” Berra commented.
“They’ve capitalized on player sales worth millions, often turning out players whose past teams fans may not recognize. They clearly have a system that works.”
“The newcomers are settling in well, benefiting from a good environment, quality facilities, and a vibrant city, making their transition seamless and impactful,” he continued.
Lawrence Shankland celebrated his 163rd goal in Scottish football this past Saturday, achieving the status of the top scorer since the Scottish Professional Football League’s formation in 2013.
“His start has been nothing short of remarkable. It’s wonderful that he’s secured a three-season extension here—this feels like his true home,” Berra reflected.
“While he may already be a legend among Hearts supporters, he has the potential to elevate his legacy further by lifting a trophy as captain. That would be an extraordinary achievement.”
