Title: Melania Trump Appeals to Putin on Behalf of Abducted Ukrainian Children
In August 2025, First Lady Melania Trump reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin with concerns about the plight of Ukrainian children displaced during Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
In her poignant letter, dated August 15, Melania expressed, “No matter where they are born—whether in a serene rural area or a bustling urban center—every child harbors dreams of love, opportunity, and safety.”
She emphasized the duty of leaders to ensure a hopeful future for the next generation, stating, “As responsible adults, we must create a world filled with dignity and peace, allowing every child to awaken to safety and promise.”
The communication was relayed to President Putin ahead of a crucial summit in Alaska between U.S. and Russian officials. While Melania was not present at the discussions held at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson near Anchorage, her heartfelt message aimed to draw attention to the significant issue of child abductions that has arisen since the conflict began in February 2022.
The Ukrainian government reports that over 19,000 children have been forcibly taken to Russia, with the figures potentially being much higher. The United Nations condemned these actions in March, highlighting the suffering imposed on Ukrainian children. Russia has countered by claiming it is providing refuge from conflict.
In her letter, Melania urged, “Mr. Putin, you hold the power to restore joy and laughter to these innocent lives.” Her appeal underscored the universal innocence of children, transcending national and ideological borders.
She further posited that protecting these children’s innocence isn’t just a matter for Russia; it is a humanitarian obligation that benefits all of humanity. “Such a transformative act could be initiated with a single signature,” she emphasized, adding, “The moment is now.”
Ahead of the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Russia has been uncooperative regarding negotiations for the return of Ukrainian children. He mentioned that while some children have been returned through international mediation, a comprehensive agreement remains elusive.
Zelensky asserted, “We seek a resolution that serves all parties involved: President Trump, the Russians, and, most importantly, the innocent children caught in this conflict.”
