Emma Raducanu will be sitting out next week’s Berlin Tennis Open as she continues to manage a persistent back issue.
The 22-year-old has been battling this problem since her performance in Strasbourg last month, leading up to the French Open. She also took a medical timeout during her recent quarter-final match against Qinwen Zheng at Queen’s Club on Friday.
After the match, Raducanu remarked: “This has been a nagging issue for the past few weeks. I’ve dealt with back problems before, and it’s just one of those vulnerabilities I have. I recognize the importance of proper care.”
“While I’m not overly worried that it’s something grave, it’s certainly bothersome and requires careful handling.”
Raducanu had initially opted to play in Berlin after receiving a wild card invitation to this WTA 500 event, which features nine of the world’s top 10 players.
Instead of competing in Berlin, the former US Open champion will focus on rest and recovery to ensure she’s fit for Wimbledon.
This decision means Raducanu will not be seeded at her home grand slam, but she remains optimistic about participating in the Lexus Eastbourne Open the week prior to Wimbledon.
Last year, she achieved her first career win over a top-10 player by defeating Jessica Pegula on the south coast, eventually reaching the fourth round at the All England Club.
