Get Ready for the Thrill: Dollywood’s ‘Night Flight Expedition’ Soars into 2024!

Dollywood Attraction Announcement

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee (WATE) — On Wednesday, Dollywood excitedly announced new details regarding a highly anticipated upcoming attraction set to debut in 2026.

During a lively skit, the park, notably absent its iconic founder Dolly Parton, introduced the “Night Flight Expedition,” a groundbreaking ride that promises four exhilarating experiences bundled into one.

Dollywood President Eugene Naughton explained that this innovative concept has been in development for three years and is scheduled to open in spring 2026.

Typically, Parton joins Naughton for such announcements, but this time, she sent a heartfelt video message to fans due to a recent health issue. “I faced some challenges with a kidney stone, which led to an infection. The doctor advised me to rest and not travel right now,” Parton shared with the audience, adding that while she may not be there physically, she is present in spirit.

She also expressed her enthusiasm for the new ride, admitting that although she usually skips the rides at Dollywood, this one seems enchanting enough to tempt her.

Interestingly, a connection to another Dollywood attraction, the Big Bear Mountain coaster, was hinted at during the announcement. Recent visitors to the park might have observed construction activity near Big Bear Mountain or noticed posters for “Hidden Hollow Aviation” scattered throughout.

Naughton mentioned that they worked diligently to keep the ride’s details under wraps, feeling a bit odd announcing the news without Parton by his side. He was joined on stage by Andrew Wexler, CEO of Herschend Family Entertainment, Dollywood’s parent company.

Naughton and Wexler recounted a recent trip to Europe shortly after the debut of Big Bear Mountain in 2023, where they tested a prototype of “Night Flight Expedition.” The ride will weave a story set in Wildwood Grove, highlighting the magic of the Great Smoky Mountains at night, a region celebrated for its remarkable biodiversity.

“It’s one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, and it truly comes alive at night through its plants and wildlife,” Naughton explained.

The attraction will feature four thrilling components where guests will soar, drop, climb, and plunge like on a traditional roller coaster, culminating in a journey to a “very special lake.” All of this action takes place indoors within a massive 44,000-square-foot facility containing 500,000 gallons of water for a thrilling “roaring rapids” experience.

During the 2025 season preview in March, Parton and Naughton expressed that this project represents Dollywood’s largest, most ambitious, and potentially most expensive endeavor to date.
