DOTHAN, Alabama (2025) — Gary Corbitt, a heartbroken father mourning the loss of his daughter Brittany in a tragic drive-by shooting in 2022, is experiencing a bittersweet sense of relief. His daughter’s best friend, Jayden Thomas, previously labeled a suspect, had her charges dismissed by a grand jury last week.
“I’m grateful for the work we did with the district attorney’s office,” Corbitt remarked. “The evidence simply wasn’t there to convict her, and hopefully, we can all find some peace now.”
Thomas, alongside three others, had been charged with capital murder and attempted murder, enduring over two years in jail while consistently claiming her innocence.
“The threats were mutual; I received threats due to her situation,” Corbitt explained.
Corbitt played an essential role in advocating for Thomas, revealing that she was merely the driver of the vehicle targeted during the incident on Ozark Road in Newville.
“It’s hard to fathom that anyone would risk their life like that,” he said. “I communicated frequently with the DA’s office and examined various pieces of evidence, including phone records. There was no justification for sending an innocent person to prison.”
Meanwhile, three alleged perpetrators are now facing legal proceedings and awaiting trial.
“We’re pursuing justice for my daughter, Brittany,” Corbitt stated, reflecting on the profound emptiness his family feels without her presence during special occasions.
“If she were here today, I’d likely be hosting a barbecue as she was always the last to arrive, and everyone would wonder, ‘Where’s Brittany?’”
While relieved that one aspect of this daunting case has concluded, Corbitt believes this experience serves as a cautionary tale.
“Stay aware of your surroundings; it’s easy to fall into trouble but incredibly difficult to extricate yourself. Sometimes, it’s just best to stay home,” he advised.
