As of Sunday, Luciano Spalletti has been dismissed from his position as coach of the Italian national team. He made this announcement following a disappointing defeat to Norway, although he will continue to lead the team for their upcoming match against Moldova on Monday.
During a press conference ahead of the Moldova encounter, after Norway’s 3-0 victory over Italy, Spalletti shared, “I was informed by [Italian football federation] president [Gabriele] Gravina that I will no longer serve as coach of the national team.” He further expressed his desire to remain in the role, stating, “I had no intention of stepping down; I was eager to continue my tenure.” He will guide the team on Monday while discussions regarding his contract ensue.
Taking over in September 2023, Spalletti’s term lasted less than two years. He replaced Roberto Mancini and led Italy to Euro 2024; however, their lackluster performance led to mounting pressure. Italy entered the Euros as defending champions but faltered after winning their initial match against Albania, subsequently losing to Spain and drawing with Croatia, ultimately being eliminated by Switzerland in the round of 16.
This year started poorly for Italy as they lost 2-1 against Germany at San Siro in the Nations League quarterfinals, and despite a spirited comeback in the second leg, fell short of the semifinals. Their latest setback against Norway, in which they trailed 3-0 by halftime, illustrated their struggles, prompting the Italian football federation (FIGC) to take action.
“I firmly believed we could qualify for the World Cup,” Spalletti asserted, adding, “This national team has the talent to reach that stage.” He expressed his passion for the team’s jersey and commitment to the players, emphasizing his desire for them to give their all in the upcoming match.
When asked if he felt betrayed, Spalletti struggled to contain his emotions, leaving the press conference in tears. Gravina had previously commented on the team’s performance, indicating he could not accept such a loss in sports, stating, “It’s essential to understand how to lose.”
At 66 years old, Spalletti’s extensive career includes stints with Roma, Zenit St. Petersburg, and Inter Milan, as well as leading Napoli to the Scudetto in 2023 before taking on the national team role. Reports suggest that Stefano Pioli, currently coaching Al Nassr and a former Serie A title winner with AC Milan, is a top candidate to succeed Spalletti. Claudio Ranieri, who has stepped back from management, is also being considered, with the possibility of him returning to the national fold if offered the chance.
