Martín Zubimendi has expressed that his future is still uncertain, despite significant interest from Arsenal and has shared that new Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso is a key inspiration for him.
Arsenal has been pursuing the Real Sociedad and Spanish midfielder for several months. According to sources speaking to ESPN, a deal is reportedly nearing completion, pending a medical examination.
However, Zubimendi maintains that he has no clarity on how the summer transfer window will unfold. Alongside Arsenal, Real Madrid and Liverpool—who he declined last summer—are potential destinations, while remaining at Real Sociedad also remains a viable option.
“I acknowledge that there are possibilities, but it seems like this summer will be lengthy and complicated, and I can’t predict how it will conclude,” Zubimendi remarked during an interview with Radio Nacional from the Spain national team camp.
“At the moment, my focus isn’t on the transfer market. I’m here with the national team, which demands my full attention, and I will address anything that arises when necessary.”
Recently, Zubimendi shared images on Instagram enjoying a day at the beach in San Sebastián, despite rumors of him undergoing a medical with Arsenal in the UK.
He clarified, “This illustrates the nature of the football world. Sometimes I wake up to read stories about myself that I wasn’t even aware of, and that incident was one such case.”
“I tend not to take these things too seriously; my intent with those posts was to highlight that the situation being portrayed wasn’t accurate.”
Though Zubimendi acknowledges the possibility of transferring to Madrid as a mere “hypothesis,” he has insisted that Alonso continues to be one of his role models.
“I’ve always looked up to him, and I feel fortunate to have had him coach me in the reserve team during a pivotal year,” Zubimendi noted.
“However, I prefer to discuss present realities rather than hypotheticals. I think it would be disrespectful to comment on a potential Madrid move while representing my country in a significant tournament.”
Spain is set to face France in the Nations League semi-final this Thursday.
