Tragic news has emerged from Portugal as Jorge Costa, the former captain of FC Porto, has passed away at the age of 53 due to a cardiac arrest at the club’s training facility.
A pivotal figure in Porto’s history, Costa captained the team to Champions League victory in 2004 under the management of José Mourinho, and he proudly represented Portugal in 50 international matches.
Costa also had a brief stint in the English Premier League with Charlton Athletic during the 2001-2002 season before retiring from active play in 2006.
Transitioning into management, he guided 16 different clubs and assumed the role of Porto’s director of professional football last season.
“Jorge Costa exemplified the core values of FC Porto, including dedication, leadership, and an unwavering drive for success,” the club stated. “His influence will resonate with generations of supporters.”
