Remembering Matt Beard: A Legacy in Women’s Football as Former Liverpool Manager Passes Away at 47

The football community mourns the loss of Matt Beard, the former Liverpool manager, who passed away at the age of 47, as confirmed by the Women’s Super League club.

Beard successfully guided Liverpool to consecutive WSL championships in 2013 and 2014, marking a significant achievement in the club’s history.

He returned to Liverpool in 2021 but faced a challenging season, leading to his dismissal in February 2025.

In their statement, Liverpool expressed their heartfelt condolences, highlighting Beard as “an exceptionally dedicated and accomplished manager.” They remarked, “His integrity and kindness endeared him to all at the club, and he will be fondly remembered. Rest in peace, Matt.”

During his second tenure, Beard helped Liverpool secure promotion to the WSL and achieved a commendable seventh-place finish upon their return to the top division.

He also paved the way for Liverpool’s inaugural Champions League journey.

Mark Beard, Matt’s brother, shared a heartfelt tribute, describing him as “an incredible, compassionate man who touched the hearts of all who knew him.” He added, “We will cherish our memories of you, Matt.”

The Football Association recognized Beard as a “vital contributor” to women’s football, extending their sympathies to his family and loved ones during this challenging time.

The WSL expressed their condolences on social media, stating, “Our deepest sympathies go out to Matt Beard’s family, friends, and loved ones. His impact on the development of women’s football was profound, and he will be missed dearly by the community.”

After a brief stint as Burnley’s manager starting in June, Beard resigned after only two months in charge.

His managerial journey also included spells at Millwall Lionesses, Chelsea, West Ham, and the National Women’s Soccer League team Boston Breakers, along with a short interim period at Bristol City.

Burnley offered their tribute, affirming, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Matt’s family and friends during this difficult period.”

Millwall Lionesses, where Beard began his managerial career, released a statement saying, “We are profoundly saddened by the news of Matt’s passing. Our love and support go out to his family, friends, and colleagues from all the clubs he has impacted at this time of sorrow.”
