Scottie Scheffler’s Sub-70 Streak Snapped: Mackenzie Hughes Takes Charge at Napa’s Wine Country Open

Scottie Scheffler’s impressive run of 21 consecutive rounds under 70 has come to an end, as he concluded the first round of the Procore Championship in Napa, California, trailing leader Mackenzie Hughes by seven strokes.

In a solid performance, US Ryder Cup newcomer Ben Griffin fired a six-under-par 64, positioning himself just one shot behind Hughes, who currently leads.

Scheffler, the reigning world number one, previously shared the record for the longest streak of sub-70 rounds with golfer Patrick Cantlay, and hasn’t finished outside the top eight since March.

Reflecting on his round, Scheffler noted, “It was a pretty frustrating day overall. I felt like I executed well in many areas but just didn’t see the results I was hoping for.”

Looking ahead, Scheffler is gearing up for his third Ryder Cup appearance, set to commence in the USA on September 26th, and several other members of the 12-man US team are utilizing this tournament as part of their preparation.

Russell Henley recorded a commendable 65, while US Open champion JJ Spaun managed a 67; unfortunately, the rest of the American Ryder Cup hopefuls struggled to break the 70 mark.
