Spain’s Aitana Bonmati Released from Hospital Ahead of Euro 2025
Aitana Bonmati, the talented midfielder for Spain, has been released from the hospital after a bout of viral meningitis, just days before Euro 2025 kicks off. The 27-year-old Barcelona star is expected to rejoin her national team for training in the upcoming days.
Spain, the reigning world champions, will start their Euro 2025 campaign on Thursday against Portugal in Bern, a key match in Group B. Bonmati, who secured the Ballon d’Or title for the last two consecutive years, missed her team’s recent 3-1 friendly victory over Japan. She shared an Instagram post from her hospital bed, cheering for her teammates during the match held in Leganés, Spain.
The Spanish Football Federation confirmed her recovery, stating, "After her hospitalization, Aitana Bonmati has been discharged and is slated to return to the national training camp shortly."
Bonmati played an instrumental role in Spain’s triumph at the 2023 World Cup and their success in the 2024 Nations League. After the friendly against Japan, Spain’s head coach Montse Tome expressed the team’s commitment to her, saying, "Aitana is an invaluable player for us, and we will support her during her recovery, no matter how long it takes."
With the Euro tournament just around the corner, fans are eager to see if Bonmati will be fit to play against major competitors like Belgium and Italy in the group stage.
