Thai Foreign Ministry: Seeking Dialogue Amid Ongoing Clashes with Cambodia
In the wake of ongoing border conflicts, Thailand has emphasized its commitment to achieving a peaceful resolution through direct negotiations with Cambodia. The Thai government remains open to involving the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) if necessary, as tensions continue to escalate.
Nikorndej Balankura, spokesperson for the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke to Al Jazeera, stating that while clashes have resulted in casualties, there has been a slight improvement in the situation on the ground. "Unfortunately, fighting has persisted since yesterday, but the circumstances appear somewhat better today," he noted.
Thailand has made efforts to engage with the Cambodian government to alleviate tensions. As Nikorndej explained, "We are committed to resolving these issues peacefully through bilateral channels. Regrettably, the Cambodian response has not been encouraging."
While Thailand believes it has the capacity to handle the situation on its own, it has not dismissed the possibility of future mediation by other regional entities. "Our doors remain open for dialogue; we continue to await a constructive response from Cambodia," he said.
When discussing third-party intervention, Nikorndej conveyed that it may be premature to consider this option. However, he acknowledged that ASEAN nations could provide valuable support if the need arises.
Currently, Malaysia, holding the ASEAN chair, is facilitating communication between the two countries. Nikorndej confirmed that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reached out to Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai to discuss possible regional cooperation.
The ongoing violence has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 13 Thai civilians and one soldier, with 45 others injured, including women and children. Cambodia has reported one fatality on its side as well. "We must defend our territorial integrity and the safety of the Thai people," Nikorndej asserted.
The Thai military has reported being fired upon, contributing to the escalation of hostilities. In response to the unfolding crisis, the government has set up evacuation shelters, dispatched medical personnel, and provided assistance to civilians affected by the fighting.
Thailand has evacuated over 100,000 residents from areas near its eastern border with Cambodia due to the conflict, stirring memories of past confrontations. In parallel, Cambodian officials indicate that approximately 20,000 individuals have fled from the northern border region.
