Tragic Fire Claims Lives at Assisted Living Facility in Fall River, MA

FALL RIVER, Massachusetts (2025) – A devastating fire at the Gabriel House assisted living center has resulted in the loss of nine lives and left at least 30 individuals injured.

The incident took place around 9:50 PM on Sunday, as reported by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services. Upon arrival, emergency crews encountered thick smoke billowing from the building, where numerous residents were trapped inside.

Firefighters swiftly battled the blaze, managing to rescue many residents before the fire was extinguished by early Monday morning. The facility is home to approximately 70 people.

In total, around 50 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, with about 30 responding on their day off to assist in the emergency.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy affecting both the families and the entire Fall River community,” stated Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon. He extended his heartfelt sympathies to those mourning the loss of loved ones, noting that “multiple individuals were seen hanging out of windows, desperate for rescue.” Witnesses described police officers working diligently to break windows in a bid to save trapped residents.

The Fall River Police Department commended its officers, who bravely entered the smoke-filled building, forcibly opening doors and guiding residents to safety. Approximately a dozen non-ambulatory residents were carried out by the officers, whose decisive actions undoubtedly saved many lives.

Some residents were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, while five firefighters sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her condolences in a statement, calling the situation at Gabriel House a tragedy. “My thoughts are with those waking up to the dreadful news about their loved ones today,” she said. “I am grateful for the first responders whose heroic actions saved lives. We pray for those who lost their loved ones and for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Governor Healey also communicated with Fall River Mayor Coogan and pledged the full support of the state, emphasizing the need for community solidarity during this difficult time. “A comprehensive investigation is currently underway,” she added, highlighting the strength and resilience of the Fall River community.

Investigators from the Fall River Fire Department, local police, and the State Fire Marshal’s office are working to determine the cause of the fire.
