Grieving a pet brings forth a special kind of sorrow.
While some people choose to buy a home or a car following a divorce, my choice was a cat, as I already had the house and didn’t need a new vehicle. This acquisition marked a significant moment for me as a newly single individual—my first major purchase on my own in quite some time.
However, adopting the cat wasn’t solely my decision; it was a joint venture between my son and me. This was our first significant activity together after the divorce, just the two of us.
Eighteen and a half years ago, we drove to a mobile home located in a more rural part of the area. It wasn’t quite country living, but far enough from the city to feel adventurous.
The kitten we found was adorable and small, marketed as a Siamese. While the mother was undoubtedly Siamese, it was clear that the father was not. In situations like these, it’s hard to resist the urge to take home a kitten. I certainly couldn’t just walk away without one!
In all honesty, I didn’t mention that she was likely only half Siamese. I was somewhat apprehensive about questioning the sellers, who didn’t appear to be amenable to discussing the price.
Despite our intention for this to be a joyful experience, midway through our drive home, she urinated on my son, prompting him to ask if we could return her. I told him, unequivocally, that turning back wasn’t an option and I was quite certain a refund wasn’t in the cards.
