Despite being merely five years old, the boy perceived the lack of honesty in his father’s actions. With bravery, he challenged his father: “If you truly intended to give away everything, why do you retain the valuable items? Who will you bequeath me to?”
Annoyed, his father furiously responded: “I give you to Yama, the Lord of Death.”
Taking this word seriously, Nachiketa embarked on a journey to find Yama. Upon his arrival, Yama was absent. The boy patiently waited outside his residence without food or water for three days. His steadfastness, composure, and relentless focus captivated Yama, who upon his return, offered him three wishes.
First Wish: Nachiketa requested peace of mind and prosperity for his father.
Second Wish: He sought the knowledge of sacred fire rituals that promote spiritual development.
Third Wish: He insisted on knowing the ultimate reality — “What occurs after death?”
Yama hesitated at the third request. He offered wealth, kingdoms, pleasures, and all worldly things instead. However, Nachiketa remained resolute: “All these items are fleeting. I seek only the truth.”
Nachiketa’s unwavering resolve eventually compelled Yama to impart knowledge about life, death, and the eternal self. Nachiketa achieved enlightenment, becoming one of the earliest and most celebrated seekers in Indian philosophy.
